Taco Tuesdays! Tacos on Tuesday nights are pretty much a routine in our house. I’ll mix it up and make fajitas or enchiladas sometimes and in the summer it’s a taco salad and that is where my homemade taco seasoning mix comes in!
I like Tuesday nights to be an easy dinner. We both usually have a meeting or something going on that means we need a quick meal and even when we don’t, I still don’t want to spend an hour in the kitchen getting dinner ready. Tacos or something similar makes it easy. It also makes meal planning a breeze!
Now, I could buy premade taco seasoning, but I find them to be super salty and it’s so easy to make my own blend. That way I can control how much salt I use and I also get the flavor profile I want.
Need it spicier? Add a little more cayenne pepper. Love a smokey flavor? Bump up the smoked paprika. Want a more savory note? (which I like in my enchiladas) Some Mexican oregano does the trick.
How to Make Your Own Taco Seasoning
To make my homemade taco seasoning, I put the following spices in a small bowl and whisk until all are thoroughly combined.
- 2 teaspoons ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon Mexican oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
This makes about 2 – 1/2 tablespoons which lasts me a couple of weeks, but you can double this easily and have it for longer! Store it in a sealed jar (you can buy empty jars at Penzy’s spices or Amazon.
This seasoning blend is perfect in enchiladas, as a coating for chicken fajitas, mixed into ground beef for tacos, or even sprinkled in Bloody Marys! For more simple recipes and kitchen tips, check out my IGTV channel on Instagram!
